UTA-Nigeria, is the Nigeria Chapter of Geneva, Switzerland-based United Towns Agency for North South Cooperation, a United Nation’s accredited Non-Governmental Organization that promotes North South Cooperation between developed and developing countries.
The organization, founded in 1982 with membership in over 110 countries enjoys consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
UTA is actively involved in diverse fields from scientific exchange and humanitarian aid. It equally plays key role in raising awareness towards international mechanism for the protection of human rights and establishing solid foundation for the implementation of its strategy for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
UTA-Nigeria was approved after a rigorous process with about 100 member nations involved. The same process was employed to select the pioneer Country-President, Princess Abigail Chinyere Amalaha, a seasoned journalist and Publisher of Supremacy Magazine, an International General Interest Magazine. With her appointment, Nigeria is joining the International body after 40 years of its existence.
Amalaha was officially inducted and given declarative instrument of office as Nigeria’s First UTA President on June 5, 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Also appointed were members of the Board of Trustees for UTA-Nigeria. They are HRH, Dr Usman Nga-Kupi, the Sa’peyi of Garki, Abuja (Chairman); Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, seasoned journalist and Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, The Sun Publishing Limited; Dr Abubakar Jimoh, public relations practitioner and Director, Public Affairs, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Dr Chike Okogwu, a development consultant and disabilities advocates.
Apart from aligning with the aims and objectives to the main body, the mission statement of UTA-Nigeria, is outlined, thus:
To work with our communities to entrench and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals as well as to uphold and promote human rights.
To advocate, empower and uphold human rights as well as advance for equality, good livelihood and social wellbeing of the people.
Since the approval of the UTA-Nigeria, the Country President and her team has embarked on advocacy visits to the diplomatic corps, state governments and individuals.
